DIY Z Palette
I always go on and on and on about how much I love Makeup Geek products. However, unless you buy them in the compacts (which are usually more expensive) you’re left with the struggle of trying to figure out where and how to store the pans. I’ve wanted a Z Palette for years, ever since I found out what they were. I thought it was such an awesome and handy idea, but there was absolutely no way I was going to pay $14 for the small size. Especially when I would need a bigger size (which is $20) and to me, that’s a waste of money that I could be spending on more makeup. Duh!! I don’t need to go spend $20 on makeup and then have to turn around and spend another $20 to store it. So I figured out how to make one myself, basically for free...Assuming you have an old CD case lying around.
The supplies you’ll need for this are minimal:
~Empty CD case
~Magnetic tape (I found it with the acrylic paints at Walmart for around $3)
~A small tool (I used a cuticle pusher)
~Scissors
~Makeup pans you need to store
The first step is to take whatever small tool you chose and use it to take the CD holder section out of the actual case. This is pretty easy to do because there’s already little grooves that you can see where this section is able to pop in and out, and it doesn’t take too much pressure to remove it.
Once you’re left with just the case, use your scissors to cut the magnetic tape into whatever sizes you need for the products you’ll be placing in it. Put the sticky side of the tape on the case with the magnet facing up. The metal of the Makeup Geek and Ofra pans that I put in mine are already magnetic, so small sizes of the tape were fine to hold them in place.
It’s as simple as that! After you’ve put your magnetic tape in place, you’re ready to put in the makeup pans wherever you would like. In this palette, I chose different size pans to show you different options. The size of Makeup Geek eye shadows are a typical size of a single eye shadow and can fit into other pre-made magnetic palettes, such as the one Coastal Scents offers for $10. However, with the Ofra eye shadow and banana powder pans, as well as the Makeup Geek blush pans finding storage can be a little more difficult. Which is what encouraged me to find a solution like this.
This has been such a helpful alternative for the z palette. I currently have three of these that I’ve made now and they work like a charm. They’re sturdy enough to keep the makeup from breaking. It’s clear so I’m able to see exactly what’s inside and is a great way to keep all of my favorite products in one place. I love being able to change the arrangement whenever I need to and it’s perfect to put your essentials in while travelling.
