Mac Eye Shadow Review

I know this is going to sound crazy, especially for me being such a makeup maniac that I am, but I have never owned a Mac eye shadow in my life. Ever. I always held a grudge against them because I didn’t understand who they thought they were charging so much for a single eye shadow (or other makeup products) that definitely doesn’t cost them very much to make. But recently, they lowered their price from $10 to $6 each and since that’s the same price as my beloved Makeup Geek eye shadows, I took that opportunity to pick up four shades just to see what the hype is all about. On the Mac website, it still says “original price” and “new price” so I’m not sure if it’s a sale or permanent change, but I wouldn’t get too excited either way -- they’re not that impressive.

The four shades that I picked up were (from left to right in the swatch picture below) All That Glitters, Soft Brown, Quarry, and Copperplate. These are the same size as Makeup Geek, Coastal Scents, Morphe, etc. Their shipping was free, which is always appreciated, and it arrived on time just a couple days after I placed my order. They have 124 different shades to choose from, so there’s definitely plenty of options and you even get your choice of a free sample at checkout. I chose a sample of their Prep & Prime primer, but had no idea it was going to be full of glitter which is the last thing I want all over my oily skin. So I already passed that on to my sister who has dry skin. Definitely disappointed about that one!

As far as the individual shadows, All That Glitters seems to be one of their most popular shades and recommended by almost everyone. I didn’t like it. When I hear that name, I think of something that’s really going to brighten up my entire lid and reflect all the light. It didn’t do that at all. It’s more of a shimmery rose rather than a bright champagne pink that I was expecting. The other three colors I picked up are all mattes. Soft brown is a nice warm, camel tan to put in the crease. Quarry is a soft taupe with some gray and purple undertones. It actually reminds me a lot of Makeup Geek’s Unexpected, which is one of my favorites. Copperplate is a concrete gray with brown undertones and every time I think of that name, it reminds me of the movie Goonies and Chester Copperplate. Does anybody remember that?? Leave me a comment if you do!

While these definitely aren’t the worst shadows I’ve ever tried, they were really disappointing for what they are. You think about Mac eye shadows and how much love they get in the beauty community, but after trying them they’re not anything better than Makeup Geek or the Ulta brand eye shadows that I love. I even think both Makeup Geek and Ulta are better as far as the quality, texture, and pigmentation they give off. The Mac shadows were more patchy and not as buttery smooth. They do come with magnets on the bottom already, which seems like a nice gesture since the actual pans aren’t magnetic, but they’re not very strong magnets and it’s just an added hassle to add better ones yourself.

Overall, I think these are much too hyped up and I definitely don’t recommend them at all. This might not be the positive review that you were hoping for, it’s not what I was hoping for either, but y’all know I’m not going to suggest anything I don’t truly love. I do really hope you found this review useful and hope it helps you save some money in your makeup shopping!

This week is a very busy week for me, so I decided to go with one of my favorites and chose the Sinful Colors polish in Soul Mate. I’ve talked about this one before, but it really is one of my go-tos for something easy. Sinful Colors has amazing quality, so I know I won’t have to worry about any chipping and the soft dusty pink matches with absolutely everything.
What’s on your nails this week?
