How To Prolong A Self Tan

Summer is right around the corner, y’all!! With as much as I love being tan, I’ve gone the entire Winter and Spring without grabbing my self tanning mousse once. I figured if the only things showing are my neck and hands, then there’s really no point. I wouldn’t say that I’ve been embracing my marshmallow skin, though, I am definitely ready to get some color back! Self tanning does take a lot of effort to apply so the longer it lasts, the better. I discussed in my original self tan post my best tips for application and now I’ll explain my two best tips for prolonging its wear time.

The first part is to make sure you prep your skin correctly before application. That means exfoliating! It’s best to remove all of the dead skin that’s sitting at the surface and start with fresh new skin. If you don’t, then you’ll just be applying the self tanner over dead skin cells that are ready to shed off. That will not only cause your self tan to fade more quickly, but it will also fade unevenly. The Tree Hut Shea Sugar Scrubs are my favorite. They’re super easy to find in the drugstore and incredibly affordable.
The second part is to take care of your skin for the days following application. That means applying lotion every single day, preferably after showering. Even if lotion isn’t in your everyday routine (which it should be), this is definitely the time you want to make it a priority. The more moisturized your skin is, the longer the tan will last and the more evenly it will fade away. If you don’t keep your skin moisturized, you run the risk of looking like a lizard. Aside from that being totally not cute, it’s also extremely uncomfortable.
It may sound like a lot at first, but it’s not actually that difficult. Exfoliating should be done in the shower before shaving when you’re doing all the prep work and probably only takes about 2-3 minutes. And once you get in the routine of moisturizing the body everyday, that will only take a few minutes also. It only seems like a big deal when it’s something you’re not accustomed to. Just trust me when I say it’s so worth it!
