Kat Von D Shade + Light Eye Palette Review
Happy Wednesday!! I hope everyone’s having a great day so far! Before we go any further into this post, let me just go ahead and introduce you to the most beautiful eyeshadow palette that has ever been created - the Kat Von D Shade + Light Eye palette. I know I probably say that about a lot of palettes and eyeshadows, but I seriously mean it about this one! It is full of every matte neutral shade you could ever want and the quality is beyond amazing. Finally!!!
I had been holding off for the longest time to not spend money on a high-end eyeshadow palette until I found one that I knew I would get my money’s worth and I’m so glad I waited. I remember watching Kat Von D on the tattoo shows when I was younger, but I never thought I’d follow her journey years later and own one of her makeup products. It’s so funny how things turn out sometimes!
I bought this palette at Sephora for $48. It comes with twelve eyeshadows and a mirror. There is no section for a brush, but I’m actually happy about that because that usually means more effort went into the quality of the shadows. The packaging feels very nice and sturdy, and I like that the shade names are listed on the back of the actual palette for easy reference. The shade names are a little silly to me, but I think they accurately represent Kat’s style.
You can obviously use the shades however you would like, but she does have them specifically placed in quads to separate the cool tones, warm tones, and neutrals. In the picture below, the pink section is the neutral shades which include: laetus, samael, solas, and lucius. The middle yellow section includes the cool toned shadows: lazarus, saleos, shax, and liberatus. The green section on the right side has all of the warm tones: ludwin, succubus, sytry, and latinus.
Instead of swatching the entire twelve shadows on my arm, I decided to keep it in the quad format because that’s typically how I wear them. I can’t say that I have a favorite, it all just depends on what I’m wearing or how I feel each day when I go to do my makeup. For the neutral tones shown below, I love using laetus as a base and to help blend if I tend to go too heavy-handed. The brown shades are both beautiful and I usually switch up where I place those on my eye, but lucius always goes on the inner half and by my brow bone.
When I first looked at this palette, both online and in-store, I thought lazarus was a gray but it is actually a beautiful soft taupe. I wasn’t worried about the pigmentation on the brown, those tend to always be pretty good in palettes. But I was especially blown away by the quality of both the black and the white shadows. White seems to be difficult for a lot of companies to create, but they did an amazing job on this one.
I was never much into warm toned shadows before, but this palette definitely broke me out of that. Ludwin is one of my favorites now for creating the most natural definition in the crease. Succubus also had me a little worried because I’ve never used such a red-toned brown, but it looks beautiful with this quad and I’m definitely more comfortable with it. Latinus is the perfect highlight shade to go with these shadows. They all match so beautifully together.
Not only do I get plenty of use out of every single shade in this palette, which is one of the most important aspects when thinking about buying a high-end product, but the quality and texture of these shadows is amazing. They’re all the same, there’s not one shade that’s different than another when it comes to consistency. They’re incredibly smooth, but not so buttery that they just blend together. The formula on these is absolutely perfect! With a primer, I’ve gone an entire eight hours with very little fading and zero creasing.
If you love matte eyeshadows, especially natural shades, as much as I do then you definitely need to think about checking this palette out. This would be perfect for travel because it has every shade you would need for creating multiple different looks, and you don’t have to worry about a mirror or unsafe packaging. I’ve been reaching for this palette nonstop recently and I can’t recommend it enough!
