Elf Camo Concealer Review

The Elf Camo Concealer has become one of the most popular and talked about concealers to hit the market since Tarte Shape Tape was released. After Shape Tape, all the brands started creating their own comparable versions, but none of them gained as much attention as Elf’s Camo Concealer. I’ve been completely satisfied with my previous concealer and never felt the need to find a replacement, but my inner makeup lover’s curiosity finally got the best of me and I just had to see what this was all about.
If you haven’t heard about this concealer movement, all the new releases seem to have an oversized doe foot applicator and they almost all claim to have intense pigmentation. Elf is known for being one of the more affordable brands and their Camo Concealer is around $5-6, depending on the store. They have a pretty large shade range and even though I picked this up in person, it still took me two tries to find my correct shade. Shade matching is key and can completely change the product experience!

This concealer claims to provide full-coverage that will last for up to 16 hours. It’s also supposed to have a lightweight, oil-balancing formula that dries matte and won’t settle into fine lines. It’s recommended for all skin types and can be found almost anywhere Elf is sold, as well as on the brand website.
Although they do have a nice shade range of this concealer, the selection available in-store is pretty limited. I first got the shade Light Peach, which ended up being wayyy too light. I exchanged it for Medium Sand, which seems to match me perfectly.

Finding the right shade is crucial because when I started with one that was too light, I had a complete different experience with the product. It didn’t cover very well and was almost impossible to blend in. It was so patchy that I even had to take off my face makeup and start all over! Once I got the shade that was right for me, I didn’t have any of those problems.
The concealer I’ve used for as long as I can remember is the Maybelline Fit Me concealer. It blends in effortlessly, has great coverage, lasts all day, doesn’t feel heavy, it’s everything I need in a concealer and it’s never let me down. In the photo above, you can really see how large the Elf wand actually is. That definitely makes applying the product to the skin a lot faster.

The main difference between these two, aside from the wands, is the coverage. When Elf says the Camo Concealer is full coverage, they mean it! In the swatch photo below, you can see how much more the Elf (top) covers compared to the Maybelline (bottom).

I really appreciate how full coverage the Elf concealer is, but sometimes it can be a little too much for me. I don’t typically wear foundation everyday and if I apply the Elf concealer to spot cover areas around the center of my face, it can look a little obvious. Whereas the Maybelline blends in a little better and looks more like skin because the coverage isn’t as intense.
One of my favorite things about this Camo Concealer is how matte it leaves my skin. It does feel a little heavier, so you might want to keep that in mind. But when I use this around the center of my face, I notice my skin stays matte longer compared to other products. I also really appreciate how well this covers my undereye circles without settling or creasing into any fine lines.

While this isn’t my favorite new concealer for my daily makeup application, it is one that I’ll be reaching for when I need more oil control or long-lasting coverage. If you prefer more full coverage makeup, this is definitely one I’d recommend. It is a really good quality product and the price just can’t be beat!
