The Body Shop Tea Tree Mattifying Lotion Review

Who knew finding a good moisturizer would be so difficult?? I had finally found my favorite in the Clinique Acne Solutions All Over Clearing Treatment and now (I believe) it’s discontinued. Since the beginning of this year, I’ve been on the hunt for a replacement. I tried one from Origins that was just so-so and without wanting to repurchase that one or drop close to $50 on a 1 oz bottle of lotion, I ended up with The Body Shop Tea Tree Mattifying Lotion.

I’ve only ever tried a few products from The Body Shop before. I think their body butters smell absolutely delicious and I’m pretty sure they’re supposed to be a more “healthy” brand that doesn’t pack their products with a bunch of unknown chemicals. I found this on sale at Ulta and for $10, I figured it was my best option.

In searching for a new moisturizer, I was looking for something that I can apply in the morning and that is lightweight enough to work well under makeup. I need something for oily, acne prone skin with some kind of acne fighting ingredient. I would’ve preferred salicylic acid because that always seems to react well with my skin.
This lotion claims to be a lightweight daytime moisturizer that is suitable for blemished skin. That sounds exactly like what I’m looking for! It doesn’t include salicylic acid, but is instead infused with organic tea tree oil, lemon tea tree oil, and tamanu oil that is supposed to control breakouts and hydrate the skin without clogging the pores or leaving a greasy feeling.

The consistency of the lotion is somewhat gel-like. It doesn’t have the traditional white lotion look that most of us are used to. It does have a slight tea tree oil scent, but it’s not overpowering and it doesn’t linger for very long. A little bit of this lotion goes a long way and it absorbs into the skin pretty quickly.
After using this lotion for a few months, I’d say I am pretty impressed with it. It seems to work well under makeup, it’s done a decent job at controlling my breakouts, and it doesn’t feel heavy on the skin. However, I’m a little less impressed with the mattifying claims. I don’t think this really does much for mattifying the face or controlling my oil.

While I wouldn’t go as far as saying this is my new favorite lotion, I would consider repurchasing this again. It’s not very expensive, it doesn’t suffocate my skin, and it’s not full of chemicals. If you have a good lotion recommendation for the qualities I’m looking for, please let me know!
