Tarte Big Ego Mascara Review
Mascara is one of my favorite things ever because even if you’re not wearing any other makeup, it still helps to enlarge the eyes and make the face appear more awake. I do have a few favorite mascaras that I always go back to, but I love testing new ones in hopes of finding something even better than the rest. Drugstore brands are great at producing high quality mascaras, so my expectations are set pretty high when trying one from a more prestige brand.
This Tarte Big Ego mascara is definitely the brightest product in my collection. I love the neon pink mixed with the metallic gold lettering. The packaging does have quite a bit of weight to it and the lid snaps in place when closed, which are two main differences between high-end and drugstore products. This mascara retails for $23 and can be found on the Tarte website, as well as in stores like Ulta and Sephora.
The claims on this mascara are pretty simple. It’s supposed to instantly lift, lengthen, and volumize the lashes with its ultra-black, flake-free vegan formula that lasts for 16 hours. Some of its key ingredients include Babassu to nourish the lashes, Glycerin to hydrate, Vitamin B5 for its antioxidant, soothing, and moisturizing properties, as well as Hydroxyethylcellulose and Sunflower Seed Wax to naturally thicken the lashes.
The photos below show the entire application process beginning with my natural straight lashes, to curling them, and adding three coats of this mascara. Each additional coat of mascara is visibly noticeable, which is very much appreciated. The hourglass shaped wand is easy to work with and I’ve never had any issues with this formula clumping regardless of the amount of product applied.
There’s definitely a noticeable difference when looking at a side by side of the before and after. I can specifically see the biggest improvement on my lower lashes. While it did add a lot of volume and a decent amount of curl to my upper lashes, there’s not as much length as I would typically like to see.
Although this isn’t a bad mascara by any means, it is a little disappointing. I love what it does for my lower lashes, but it’s underwhelming on the upper lashes. Especially when paired with darker eyeshadows on the lid. I like my lashes to really pop and unless I wear almost no other eye makeup, this mascara just doesn’t do it for me. When considering the price, I’d rather choose one from the drugstore or go with a high-end product that I can trust like the Benefit Roller Lash mascara.
