Covergirl Jumbo Gloss Balm Review
Lip crayon pencils are something that has become very popular within the past couple of years and I want to say Clinique is the one that started it all. I had a few sample sizes of those as gifts with purchase when picking up my Acne Solutions products. They were really nice and I enjoyed them while they lasted, but after trying a few other brands (including the Nars Lip Pencils that I’ve reviewed previously) I think Covergirl is the one that comes closest to what Clinique provides. The shape, the formula, the texture, the consistency, is all pretty close to the Clinique Chubby Sticks, but at a much more reasonable price.
I only have three colors from Covergirl's line, but they offer much more than that. Covergirl is very easy to find at most stores and these usually sell for around $6 or so. They come with .13 oz of product and just for some comparison, the Clinique Chubby Sticks retail at $17 each for .1 oz. It’s close to the same amount of product in each, but Covergirl’s price is much more reasonable. These are labeled as a gloss balm, so they are a little bit more sheer than a typical lipstick and they will have some shine to them.
The first one I have to share with you is Watermelon Twist (215). The one thing I don’t like about the packaging is that the name isn’t on it. Once you take the outer plastic packaging off to open the product, you’re only left with a number at the bottom which isn’t very helpful. All of the names have “Twist” at the end which is cute, and they are a twist up pencil which makes is much easier to use and travel with. This particular shade is a beautiful soft pink that pairs perfectly with almost any look.
Next is Coral Twist (235) and it’s the one that probably gets worn the least. It’s not because of the color, I think they did a wonderful job with this one. But I think it’s because I almost have never worn a coral lip and I’m not really sure what convinced me into buying this one. Once I have it on, I think it looks fine. It’s just not my immediate personal preference, so it usually gets kicked to the back of my collection. In person, it looks like a true glossy coral.
The last one I have is Berry Twist (230) and it’s my favorite out of the bunch. I’m always pulled to the berry shades when it comes to lip colors and this is one I’ve had to repurchase from using it up. How often does that ever happen?? It does have more purple tones to it than my favorite Berry Smoothie from Revlon, but it doesn’t have any glitter in it. And I like that it’s not too dark of a berry shade that you can actually apply it without a worry even when you don’t have a mirror handy.
I never really jumped on the matte lip trend, so these have always been much loved products of mine. However, if you don’t like much shine to your lip products I don’t think you’d be happy with these. They do feel very soft on the lips and I don’t have to worry about applying a chapstick underneath for added moisture. You can wear them as often as you want, in as many days in a row as you want and you still won’t have to worry about them drying out your lips. I definitely recommend picking one up next time you’re browsing in the store. If you have tried them before, leave me your thoughts in the comments as well as which shade is your favorite. Hope you have a fabulous weekend!
