DIY ~ Makeup Wall Art

We all know that I’m obsessed with beauty since that’s what I’m constantly talking about, but I bet you didn’t know that when I was in high school I wanted to be an interior designer. I love decorating things, I’m just really bad at making final decisions. Furnishing a house to make it feel like a home can get pretty expensive if you don’t have the time or patience to look for the best sales. So I thought it would be fun to combine my two of my favorite things: beauty and decor, but also take it a step further and only use dollar store items!

I went to the dollar store closest to me and picked up everything I would need. I decided to go with three frames so I could place them altogether in a row on the wall. I had pretty much everything I needed at home already, so I only picked up three gold frames and some fake lashes. I tried to keep the frames pretty simple because that’s the theme I was going with and didn’t pay too much attention to the size because I planned on taking out the inside border. I picked up three pairs of eyelashes and then used more dramatic ones from Pür Cosmetics that I got in last month’s Boxycharm.

The other items that I needed were white cardstock, which I already had and then I just picked out a variety of lipsticks from my collection for the first piece. I took the glass out of the frame to measure the paper and went to kissy town. I ended up using about seven different lipsticks. You could use less, I just kept applying different shades until I got the results I was looking for. I patted over it with a tissue afterwards to make sure there wasn’t any excess product that would transfer on the glass and then started placing it all back together.

I wanted one of the frames to have some kind of silly beauty quote on it and this is one of my favorites. I totally describes me because I wear my hair in a bun almost 24/7, I can’t be without my coffee, I really enjoy a good hip-hoppy rap song, and the combination of those things together keeps me motivated to get stuff done. I used Canva to create the actual document and then just messed with the size until it fit. You could also just search on Google or Pinterest to find a pre-made template and print that out. I tested it on regular printer paper first before printing the final copy on cardstock and the difference is unbelievable. So definitely try to use cardstock if you can because it’ll make the colors pop much better.

There’s actually quite a good selection of fake lashes at the dollar store, I was surprised. I mean, not that I’d actually put them on my eyes because of quality and all, but they were there! I even found well-known brands like Wet n Wild and Elf. This one was actually the hardest out of them all. I used Canva again for the wording, but placing the lashes in a perfect moon shape is a lot more difficult than you might think. Of course, the expensive Pür Cosmetics pair kept their shape the best and were the easiest to set in place. They also all included glue (except for the Pür Cosmetics lashes) so I didn’t have to worry about purchasing that separately.

This has to have been one of my favorite DIY projects that I’ve ever done, which doesn’t really come as too big of a surprise considering it was all about makeup. Even the shopping part was easy! You can put these in your bedroom, office, bathroom, or beauty room like I did. Changing out cheap frames is one of the best home decor tricks there is. Once it’s all put together, you wouldn’t even guess they all came from the dollar store. Then you can use the cash you saved to buy more makeup, it’s a double win!

Still feeling the darker colors right now, I picked out one that I haven’t worn in quite a while. I honestly can’t even remember the last time I’ve worn this Cult polish on my nails. What I do remember is obsessing over how perfect the name is for this shade. It’s called Boneyards, which is exactly what this color makes me think of. Not that I’ve ever been in a boneyard or anything...I can’t exactly remember the quality on this and how long it lasted, but it was very opaque and easy to apply. If you work in thick layers, you could easily get away with one coat on this one.
