Ulta & Sephora Birthday Gifts 2019

There are a ton of places that you can get free things on your birthday, but let’s be real the only ones that actually matter are Ulta and Sephora. Thankfully my birthday lands right after the holidays at the beginning of the year, so I can pick up these gifts right away. Last year’s post sharing the Ulta and Sephora birthday gifts went over extremely well (thank you for that!), so I figured I should probably bring the same post back this year.

It’s very rare that I ever shop at Sephora, honestly. They’ve just never been my favorite because they don’t offer as many affordable options and y’all know how much I love my drugstore makeup! I do, however, prefer their birthday system over Ulta’s. All you need is your phone number or email associated with your account and then you get to choose between a skincare or makeup set. I will always choose makeup!
The makeup gift for this year is a Kat Von D set, which I was super excited about because I love her products. Included is a mini size of her Lock-It translucent setting powder, a mini Tattoo Liner, and some Studded Kiss crème lipstick samples. The three lipstick sample shades provided are Outlaw, Lolita, and Vampira. These were a little dry in the foil packaging, but they are incredibly pigmented so a little bit goes a long way. I’ve heard wonderful things about all three of these products and I’m so happy with this little gift set!
To get Ulta’s gift, you have to bring in a barcode that they send to your email. That’s more frustrating to me because it’s not as easy as Sephora’s system. I don’t understand why they can’t just look up my account. Ulta also has different birthday gifts depending on when your birthday is. Sometimes they group months together, but this year they’re doing a different gift for every month. Their January birthday gift is an eyeshadow duo from the Ulta brand. Although I’ve always been impressed with Ulta’s eyeshadows, this gift definitely isn’t as exciting as getting products from a high-end brand like Kat Von D.
The two shades included in this duo are Petite and Beauty Junkie. Petite is a matte pinky beige shade and Beauty Junkie is a pinky mauve with a glitter finish. They’re both very creamy, but the interesting part is that they act completely different on the eyes as they do in a swatch. In the swatch, Petite is almost undetectable (at least on my pale skin anyway) and Beauty Junkie is more pigmented. But on the eyes, it’s Beauty Junkie that’s almost invisible and Petite is the one that’s more noticeable.
This year’s Ulta gift is much better than last year, but Sephora still has them beat on who provided the better set. One year Ulta’s gift was a mini size of Benefit’s Roller Lash mascara and that’s the kind of gift I’d like to see from them. Because of that, I was able to find my perfect mascara. Now, it just seems like they’re trying to cheat their way out of the birthday gifts by including their own brand’s products.

If you haven’t already, make sure you’re signed up for both Ulta and Sephora’s reward programs so you can get these birthday gifts too!
