Pixi Black Lacquer Lash Primer Review

There was a huge craze around eyelash primers a few years ago. Every company was releasing their own version, claiming to be the best, then it all just kinda faded away. Every now and then I’ll come across a lash primer, but I never had any luck in the past so I just move along without thinking twice about it. Little did I know Pixi was being quiet keeping this Black Lacquer Lash Primer hidden in their display. It amazes me how humble Pixi can be about their products when they’re some of the best on the market.

This lash primer retails for $15 (for .18 fl oz) on the Pixi website. I thought I had seen it in Target stores before also, but I’m not positive. It has a long, slightly curved wand with rubber bristles. I prefer lash products with rubber bristled wands and I do think the long size of this helps provide a better result faster.

The only real claim of this lash primer is that it will define and volumize for the ultimate intense effect. They also say that this can be a multifunctional product. It can be used alone for a natural look, before mascara for volume, or after mascara to separate and set. Some of its ingredients include sodium hyaluronate for hydration and plumping, panthenol to strengthen, and Vitamin E to nourish and protect.
The wand has very short bristles and the formula is a little on the dry side. I think both of those things help to make this primer work better. I typically apply one coat of this before mascara. This doesn’t take long to dry, so it doesn’t seem like I’m adding much time to my routine. I also really appreciate that this is a black primer rather than white because you don’t have to work as hard to try to cover it up.

In the picture below, you can see my lashes with and without the lash primer. In each photo, I used my favorite mascara -- Benefit’s Roller Lash. In the picture on the left, I applied three coats of mascara as I normally would. In the picture on the right, I applied one coat of the primer followed by two coats of Roller Lash. The lashes look pretty good in both photos, but they definitely look more volumized with the primer.

This mascara holds a curl pretty well on me, and I haven’t really noticed much of a difference in that aspect when using the primer. It doesn’t necessarily hold a curl any better, but it also doesn’t weigh my lashes down throughout the day either. I’ve had other primers that will stick to a mascara wand and thicken the rest of the formula in the tube. I’m happy to note that this one does not.
Based on my previous experience with lash primers, I wasn’t really expecting much out of this one either. Especially with such little claims that it has! The claims should have been an indicator as to how wonderful this would actually be. They didn’t have to put a bunch of insane claims all over the packaging to make up for the way this product performs. When applied to the eyes, it speaks for itself.

I thought adding a lash primer into my routine sounded super extra and like something that was going to add more time to my already lengthy process. However, I still use three coats of lash product whether I use this primer or not so it didn’t really add any extra steps or time at all. If you like lash primers or if you’ve been searching for one that actually works, I definitely recommend trying this one!

This week I’m testing another style from the Kiss imPRESS line. This one is called Queen B. I was super impressed with the last set that I had. I really wanted to get a set with a french manicure not only because I think they’re so beautiful and classy, but also because I wanted to be able to see what’s going on underneath the nail. With the gray marble design that I had before, I wasn’t able to see what the adhesive was doing. Now, I’ll be able to see what’s really happening throughout the week.
What’s on your nails this week?
